Paper towers defying gravity!

Science topic - forces.

Yes folks that's right, with only A4 paper and not a lot else, year 5 rose to the challenge of preventing the earth's gravitational pull from landing a stack of dictionaries on a desk.

To give you a heads up, we answered the following:

What did we change? - The design of each paper tower
What did we keep the same? - The materials we used to create the towers. The weight of the dictionaries (for testing each tower).
Our predictions - Wider towers will be stronger. Tall towers are more likely to succumb to the earth's gravitational pull. The more paper used, the stronger the tower will be.
Our conclusion - The structure of the tower was more important than the amount of paper used. Wider structures held more weight due to surface area.

CHECK US OUT!!!!!!!

Sonny Harry and Jacob looking very nervous as they test out their tripod design...

Next up the girls with their four legged invention..

..and Abigail's gang (pre heart attack!).

Famous Blackpool artists let loose in local church! (Do you see what I did there?!)

As a starting point for our Christmas art project (creating religious icons), year 5 took a road trip out to St Cuthbert's Church for some serious sketching opportunities.

Accompanied by proffessional artist Mr Kovalski (Husband of the wonderful Mrs Kovalska) and armed with a variety of different art pencils and clip boards, we got to work on recreating some of the beautiful artwork inside the church.

Watch this space for our finished products at the end of this half term!

A big warm welcome to the delightful new addition to Year 5, Miss Lucy Roberts! May she find joy, happiness and a whole lot of fun with Mrs Higgins and the gang!

Now you may not know this, but last half term, year 5 became problem solving detectives! With only a handful of what seemed to be random data, we worked extremely hard trying to solve different mysteries. Here are Jem and Ella proudly presenting their findings of the spookily missing coordinates!
Next up, Sonny and Domanic taking great pleasure in explaining exactly how they solved the mysteries using only the clues hidden amongst the graphs, charts and tables...
We added all of the evidence to our maths working wall which we will be updating each time we start a new unit... Watch this space!

Inspirational people break into the year 5 classroom!

Hello and welcome to year 5's 2014 - 2015 blog!

My word, we've been getting up to some interesting stuff so far this year. To kick off the second half of the autumn term we thought we'd look to one of the world's most inspirational people (and a modern day saint no less) - Blessed Mother Teresa!

The children have created this beautiful tree of Mother Teresa's famous quotes to use as inspiration on a daily basis. We've decided to display a different 'Quote of the week' on our classroom wall and to make a conscious effort to live by it. The quote for this week is:

"Let no-one ever come to you without leaving happier"

Wish us luck!
